Guatemala Mission Trip
Organized by: Alejandra Maria
February 22, 2016
My Aunt Heidi and I have made the decision to combine fundraising efforts, and in doing so have doubled the goal amount. I want thank everyone who has already donated, no matter the amount it means so much to have your support.
This coming March I will be traveling to Chichicastenango, Guatemala with my grandma and Aunt Heidi to partake in a mission trip organized by Pray America, partnered with Peace Lutheran Church (of Antigo, Wisconsin). While there we will be building homes for widows and their families, as well as provide water filters and efficient stoves.
A 30 year civil war that ended in the mid 1990’s has left Chichicastenango and surrounding areas in a state of devastation. Many of the indigenous people, especially the men, were the targets of the militia as well as government soldiers. Many of those not killed were “taken prisoner” and never seen again. The scars of that war can still be seen in the Guatemalan people today. As a result there were approximately 70,000 widows left in the area of Chichicastenango, Guatemala.
My grandfather passed away June 2014, and those of you who had the privilege of knowing him knew that Guatemala held a special place in his heart. It is this reason we have decided a mission trip through his church, in the country he loved, was the best way to honor his memory.
We are raising funds to cover the cost of:
- Building additional homes ($1,350/per house)
- Restoring existing homes ($500 each)
- Providing water filters ($75 each)
- Efficient wood burning stoves ($150 each)
“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” - James 1:27
