Guatemalan Orphanage & Women's Shelter
Organized by: Miranda Helm
We are based in San Marcos, Guatemala. Currently there is only one orphanage in San Marcos. They are only able to house 35 children at a time. They take children up to seven years old because of space constraints. Many children they take in grow up and live there until they're 18. Children often stay overnight before they leave for bigger orphanages in Xela or Guatemala City. However, there is a great need for more orphanages here in San Marcos. We are hoping to build an orphanage combined with a school for up to 300 children. We will house children from birth to 18 and prepare older children for vocation or further academic studies. Our first fundraising project is a land purchase of three acres. The other main project that we are working on is a women's shelter here in San Marcos. Femicide is rampant in Guatemala and many women and children are stuck in abusive situations. The rate of abuse and murder is high but would probably be much higher if every abusive situation were reported. Women stay in abusive situations because they don't have a place to go to or the money to leave. We are planning to build it on the same property as the orphanage but the two projects will not be connected. If the women have children with them they will be able to attend the school we will have on site. This society thrives on violence against women and our goal is to help as many women and children as we possibly can. Anything you can give will be much appreciated. By us and by the women and children you helped provide comfort and safety for through us.
