Guatemala Service Trip 2015

Last year I had the opportunity to participate in a ten day service trip to Guatemala. This trip was organized by a non-profit organization called, Tree 4 Hope, located in Harrisburg. Tree 4 Hope ( has been sponsoring similar service trips since 2003. While in Guatemala, I spent three days caring for female elders who had lost loved ones during Guatemala's civil war, at the Elder Center, and also spent seven days working at Hogar Miguel Magone Orphanage.

While at the Elder Center I helped make tortillas, assisted with the upkeep of the center and washed/massaged the women's feet. I did this because most of the women do not wear or have shoes, and their feet needed some loving care. I also visited some of the women in their homes, which consisted of dirt floors and no electricity or running water. One of the elders cried when we came to visit her because she was so grateful that my group and I had come to visit her.

While at the orphanage, I taught ESL to children ages four to eighteen. My team and I also built a tree house, administered vaccinations, taught sexual abuse/prevention classes, gave every child a new pair of shoes (thanks to many donations from others), and helped out in any way I could.

During this trip, I learned so much about the Guatemalan culture, the kindness of others and the importance of gratitude. I met many inspiring people and children while on this trip who continue to be an important part of my life. One of those is four year-old Tatiana, who has become my god child. Being her god mother means making a $7 donation to ensure that she has daily servings of fruits and vegetables. I recently sent her a "princess" gift box filled with princess themed toys and clothes which she loved.

I am looking forward to seeing Tatiana when I return to Guatemala in January of 2015. Since this trip is all about the support and help of others, I am asking you for your support in the form of a donation. This donation will go towards my airfare, lodging, meals and transportation while in Guatemala. Your donation will also provide supplies for the elders and orphans that we will bring with us (i.e. shoes, toothbrushes, hygiene kits, vaccinations, medicine, and so on).

Thank you in advance for your support and well wishes. Please feel free to share my link with others. :)
