THE STORY:

Friends of the Inyo and the June Lake Trails Committee are spearheading sustainable trail network construction around Gull Lake on the beautiful June Lake Loop.

While several small use trails currently exist in the proposed location of the new trail these unplanned routes negatively impact sensitive meadow and stream habitat, as well as erode the shoreline of Gull Lake. The new trail (2.5 miles) will provide legal and safe access for people fishing, swimming, hiking, and recreating around the lake, while protecting resources, through proper trail design. User-created trails, that are not part of the official Gull Lake Loop, will be restored to proper ecological condition. To aid in social trail restoration, volunteers will also remove invasive plant species along both old and new trail alignments. In an area with no currently established official recreation trails, the Gull Lake Loop will be the first component of a larger, interconnected planned trail system.

The Gull Lake Loop trail project presents an opportunity to bring together both the local and broader community to help improve, restore, and discover part of their back yard. It will begin to foster a deeper respect and appreciation for the land for all the people who will use it, as well as empower local citizens to create more dedicated trail opportunities. We plan to implement construction over three volunteer days during Summer 2010. This project will begin with a huge kickoff event June 5, 2010 - National Trails Day.
