Stuff About Me:

GWWI Fellowship Program

Why: Our Purpose.
The Global Women’s Water Initiative is a program of Women’s Earth Alliance, providing training and seed funding for African women leaders to implement appropriate water technologies, build economic livelihoods, and enhance leadership skills so they can improve their communities’ health, self-reliance, and resilience to climate change.

Who: Global Changemakers in the Development Field.
GWWI seeks women graduate students and development professionals from around the globe who are seeking holistic and hands-on training in international development and WASH-related education and appropriate technology. Through a competitive application process, GWWI Fellows will be selected to work directly with African women trainers on community-based water projects. Ideal candidates are enrolled or have completed graduate programs in related fields, such as international development, public health, water and sanitation, environmental engineering and have experience working in the Global South.

Where:  Uganda, East Africa.

When:   Summer 2011.

What: A Unique Opportunity to Re-Envision Development.
GWWI Fellows commit to one summer or two summers where they will participate in trainings, assist grassroots women leaders in their implementation of water projects, and conduct monitoring and evaluations of previous GWWI projects.

The Woman’s Earth Alliance 2011 GWWI Fellows will engage in a hands-on summer program where they will attend two trainings in Uganda:

  1. The Grassroots Training- 15 teams of emerging African women leaders will learn WASH technologies and concepts and receive seed grants to launch self-reliant water projects in their communities. Fellows will assist the trainers and act as global peers for grassroots women participants.

  2. The Advanced Training- Fellows will learn a holistic set of technology, livelihood, leadership, and facilitation skills related to WASH directly from African women trainers. This training will prepare Fellows to support Grassroots Training Graduates implement WASH solutions in communities and organizations across Africa.

Immediately following the trainings, GWWI Fellows will travel and train alongside the African Advanced Trainers, conducting customized refresher trainings for grassroots women graduates. Additionally, they will travel to some of the previous Grassroots Graduate projects to conduct monitoring and evaluation site visits. This exposure will give participants hands-on experience that will enable them to develop a realistic perspective when designing and implementing future community development programs throughout their careers.

How: GWWI unites global women leaders to inspire confidence and build knowledge.
Through their experience based training, GWWI Fellows will cultivate an understanding of development practices based on self-reliance, cultural appropriateness, and peer learning. GWWI Fellows will gain tools, experiences, and networks that will fuel their future work in strengthening strategies in the water and development sector.
