Northwest Michigan Habitat for Humanity is an equal opportunity housing provider, licensed builder, mortgage lender and licensed retailer.   It is the policy of this affiliate to accept applications for housing assistance from all who need a decent, affordable place to live regardless of race, religion, age, gender, national origin, disability or familial status. The Habitat ReStore and Construction Offices welcome persons with disabilities in a handicap accessible environment.  Habitat also welcomes volunteers of all skill levels,  offering opportunities for learning and community engagement to all who are willing to support the Habitat mission. Northwest Michigan Habitat complies with all local, state and federal mortgage lending and building regulations.

Just as it takes every nail, every board and every gallon of paint to finish a Habitat for Humanity home, it also takes every hour of hard work by future homeowners and volunteers, every ounce of support from generous donors, and every bit of building expertise to guide the construction process.

In every Habitat home, you find the work and dedication of many people, all working with a common goal: helping another family build strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter. Habitat for Humanity is a homeownership program that empowers families to build a new life through the stability and security of owning a home. Contrary to public perception, Habitat homes are not given away. Homes are sold to families who qualify, are willing to make a down payment, make a monthly mortgage payment, and put in 250 hours of sweat-equity per adult toward building their home and supporting the Habitat mission. After completion, the home is sold to the Partner Family on a low to a no-interest mortgage with monthly payments of principal, interest, taxes and insurance not exceeding 30% of the family's gross monthly income. The affiliate earns no profit on the sale of any home.  The home is built affordably by volunteers dedicated to lifting up families in need and who enjoy working with their hands to accomplish good in their community.  The Habitat Partner Family is encouraged to uphold the principals of their partnership with the affiliate through the course of a 20 - 30 year mortgage, continuing education, and timely mortgage payments.
