BENEFITING: Blue Mountain Project
HOURS PLEDGED: 16
Blue Mountain Project (BMP) has been working in partnership with the people of the Hagley Gap District of Jamaica since 2004. The Hagley Gap District is located in the Blue Mountains about 10 miles from Kingston, Jamaica's capital. BMP's goals are to bring clean water and quality health care to the community as well as improving literacy and economic development. There is no government or private supply of clean water in the Hagley Gap District. There are a large number of documented illnesses and most of these cases can be attributed directly to the consumption of or food preparation with contaminated water. Children have been disproportionally affected. Their growth, development and immune systems are negatively impacted and they become more susceptible to other diseases. BMP has several great programs and a current priority project is to develop a system to deliver clean water from the mountains to the community.
I know of this organization through my work on the Service and Outreach Committee at my church in Boston. Our contributions over the last two years have helped BMP engage the services of an engineer who has identified and surveyed a pipeline route. In 2011, BMP will be working to raise funds to support the construction of the pipeline. Being an engineer focused on public water supplies, this organization has a special place in my heart. I wish I could pack up and head to the Blue Mountains to help out but that's not in the cards for me right now. The next best thing is spreading the word and helping them raise money for their work. Contributions of any amount will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for taking a look at my project page. Check out BMP's programs too
