Active Minds at Saginaw Valley State University works to reduce the stigma related to mental health. The members of Active Minds contribute to the goals of the Student Affairs Division by providing services and experiences which foster growth and development of students through mental health awareness and education. Active Minds promotes student advocacy and suicide prevention in the mental health movement by aiming to change the culture on college campuses. Through education about specific and nonspecific mental health illnesses and encouraging those who need help to seek it from counseling services, Active Minds members work to stomp out stigmas attached to mental illness and serve as positive role models. Active Minds is a Registered Student Organization that works closely with the Counseling Center. Members of Active Minds at Saginaw Valley State University are not permitted or licensed to provide counseling services, but they serve as listeners, advocates, and adequate referrers to the Counseling Center. Some activities and events that Active Minds has promoted in the past include All Tied Up, Stomp Out Stigma, Depression Screenings, Relaxation Night, Survivors of Suicide’s Walk for Hope, and much more.
