Haircuts for Homeless
Organized by: Erin Hall
Growing up and living close to Detroit, I have always noticed men and women sitting on corners with signs asking for money or help or work to help feed themselves or their families. In conversing with some of these people I have learned that a great number of them feel trapped in their situation and feel "less than human" as one woman put it. Many of the people I have come in contact with through volunteering and basic human contact are eager to have a conversation and have someone to talk to. As a cosmetologist I know how important a first impression can be and so, my goal is to provide free haircuts (and shaves) to women and men in the Detroit area. My hope is that in providing this service to people, they feel taken care of, dignified, and capable. I would eventually like to partner with a clothing store to provide clothing suitable for job interviews to go with the fresh hair cut. I would like to use a van to create a mobile salon of sorts to move around the city and bring the project to the people.
