BENEFITING: Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc.
For the past two years, I've been telling people that I'm growing out my hair to donate it so that I would:
a) Sound like a really good person.
b) Have an excuse for being too cheap to cut or dye my hair.
Now I have a dilemma. My hair is really damn long and people have started to ask when I'm going to donate it. I need to come up with an end date for my Samson-like mane (a more accurate depiction of length and artistic renderings of potential hair cuts located here).
I've decided I'm not going down alone. If I have to cut my hair, other people have to give up something too. I started trying to think of a charity to force my friends and family to donate to, when I remembered that recently, the US House of Representatives voted to cut off funding to Planned Parenthood.
I'm lucky that I live in Canada where I have free and accessible reproductive healthcare, but last year, when I was in LA, I actually ended up with some pretty serious lady business issues. I didn't have insurance, I had a week until I was back in Canada, and I was completely fucking terrified. My situation was temporary, I can't imagine how scary it would be to not have access to those kinds of services on a long term basis.
Planned Parenthood provides pelvic exams, pap smears, STD testing and breast exams for women who otherwise wouldn't be able to get them. They're an invaluable resource for millions of women, and the idea that people would want to take away their funding because of abortion (which accounts for only 3% of their services, and were already ineligible for funding) is ridiculous and offensive.
So, if the awesome people I know chip in towards some lady getting her bits checked, I'm going to cut off my hair (not all of it!!! 8-10 inches!!!! It'll still be at least shoulder lengthish!!!) to Pantene's Beautiful Lengths program. They make a shitty shampoo, but they're the most reputable hair donation service I could find. The hair will go towards making wigs for women who lost their hair to chemo.
I currently have 3600 followers on the Teleeroticist account, so that means if less than a third of my followers donate a dollar, I'll be set! That seems pretty doable. Ideally I'd be able to raise more, but if I didn't find a number I could easily hit, I'd never cut my damn hair. If you donate more than $25, I will draw you a picture (see second photo), if you donate more than $100... I don't know. I'll call and thank you? If you don't have a crowdrise account, it won't tell me how to contact you, so if you donate, feel free to send me an email at email@example.com so I can thank you!
