ORGANIZER: HAIR PEACE CHARITIES
EVENT: Pittsburgh Marathon 2017
EVENT DATE: May 07, 2017
Dear friends and family,
On May 7, I will be running the Pittsburgh Half Marathon in honor of those whose lives have been affected by cancer, AND I need YOUR help to raise money for Hair Peace Charities, a small non-profit organization dedicated to helping girls and women receive financial assistance to purchase a wigs while undergoing cancer treatment. We all know someone who has battled cancer. For me, it's very close to home. I have cousins, aunts, an uncle, my great grandma, my husband's grandma and grandpa who have all battled various forms of cancer. I can remember 22 years ago, in high school, when one of my very best friends had thyroid cancer, and I couldn’t go visit her because I could have made her sick. I can remember fighting back the tears every time I visited my grandma; she was in visible pain and looked so fragile, yet never once complained. I can remember standing in my living room as I heard my aunt’s voice through the phone tell me the unforeseen news, “I have cancer.” I can remember numerous conversations with a dear friend after she discovered she had breast cancer and had to undergo multiple surgeries – she was so strong, despite her fears, her questions, and the unknown. Accordingly, I never knew that with many cancers, women lose their hair 15 days after their first chemotherapy treatment. My aunt Bonny, the one mentioned above, established Hair Peace Charities to help pay for wigs for young girls and women in her state who lose their hair from treatment. After surviving breast cancer herself, Aunt Bonny knows it is important to try and look normal for working women, mothers, and girls in school but she also knows the financial hardship of co-pays and loss of work while in treatment. Wigs cost upwards of $150 and most insurance companies do not provide assistance. Whether you live in Pittsburgh, or not, PLEASE consider contributing a small monetary donation to help Hair Peace Charities further their mission of helping young women and girls in Western Pennsylvania obtain wigs. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of girls and women undergoing cancer treatment.
Thank you all for your support!
