BENEFITING: VILLAGE COOPERATIVE INC
This past spring I took an inspiring and unforgettable trip to Haiti.
My senses took in so much more than they ever had and my heart ached at the sight of such extreme poverty and poor living situations for so many adults and children.
But I was really surprised to find beauty in so many places. What I especially found in Haiti is the the beauty of the people.
The smiles, genuine openness, and deep connections made through simply sharing a meal and listening to the stories of a daily life that is so different from mine here in NYC. Even without sharing language, I experienced profound connection, kindness and generosity from everyone I met there.
I traveled to Haiti with The Village Experience, TVE, an organization that promotes socially responsible tourism. We visited a women's anti-violence organization in Port-au-Prince... a school in Fondwa and on the coast in Jacmel, we visited the Art Creation Foundation for Children.
Art Creation Foundation for Children really is an amazing organization. They do a lot for these kids: teach them a trade, send them to school, feed them... and sometimes house them and whatever extended family they have.
From ACFFC’s website: This is a community of creative joyous children and youth, every day closer and closer to self sufficiency via the arts, strong support systems, inner strength, compassion, understanding of social justice, and belief in the reality of today and the future of tomorrow and beyond.
It is a privately funded organization teaching art and handicrafts to more than 100 children in Jacmel with limited family resources and limited funds. Here these talented children are given not only art education and three meals a day by ACFFC, but they are also sent to school.
It was here at ACFFC that the kids truly captured my heart. I realized after the trip that I am capable of so much more giving and thought about what I might do to help more.
I am inspired to help TVE and ACFFC with a shared project, and I want to share the opportunity here:
We are helping to build basic home structures to provide a safe environment for the older children and their extended families. Its a great opportunity for some of the young adults from ACFFC to become independent and for some families of ACFFC kids to get access to a place of their own. Many families were affected by the earthquake of 2010 and are still struggling as hardly any of the aid funds made it out of Port-au-Prince.
OUR GOAL: $5,100 (each home is $1700 to construct)
This would cover the building of 3 basic home structures in Jacmel, Haiti.
The young adults from ACFFC construct the homes themselves, so the cost is just for the materials.
The money goes directly to the building of the homes via The Village Cooperative. There is no middleman. This is why I am supporting this project. We can directly see the results... and we will via photos!
Deep gratitude and appreciation to all who support.
