Our Mission

Fighting Poverty with Justice - Large segments of the world’s population are robbed of the chance to better their lives and climb out of poverty because they are excluded from the rule of law. This lack of legal protection destroys livelihoods, breeds inequality and foments social unrest. Justice and rights are increasingly recognized by the international community as the foundation for equitable growth and development and have been included in-depth throughout the post-2015 Millennium Development Goals agenda. The Hakí Network is a new global initiative to respond to this critical need by ensuring rights are protected and institutions support justice for the poor and vulnerable.

The Hakí Network is a new global organization founded by community organizations, lawyers, advocates and donors. We emphasize rights and justice as integral to development and specifically address the rights violations and justice barriers that affect the poor. Hakí emphasizes enshrinement of rights in national law and their domestic and international enforcement through a combination of technical assistance, service delivery, and advocacy. We pay particular attention to rights that have traditionally been under-emphasized, but that are of utmost importance to economic opportunity for the poor and vulnerable and that can have a potentially transformative effect in the fight against poverty. In particular, Hakí emphasizes:

Land and property rights. Secure ownership and control of land and natural resources can bring stability and create economic opportunities for the poor.

Gender rights. Women are engines of change and growth in their communities, but systematic discrimination and predation plagues communities around the world.

Labor rights. Men, women and children around the world consistently face labor exploitation, intimidation and dangerous working conditions with little protection from the state or access to legal recourse.

Transparency. Corruption and discrimination, including lack of legal identity, routinely deny access for disadvantaged groups to critical public services such as health care, water, and education.
