THE STORY:
The 120th Boston Marathon will take place on April 18, 2016 and The Summer Learning Project will send up to 15 of its supporters to the starting line with some of the world's finest athletes. All of the money raised will fund "camperships"-- scholarships for children to attend summer camp-- and our runners are excited to race in support The Summer Learning Project.
Both Hale and Courageous Sailing belong to The Summer Learning Project and work to prevent “summer slide” for Boston Public School children. “Summer slide” happens when young minds aren’t exposed to academics for three months over summer vacation. Up to two-thirds of the achievement gap between low-income students and their higher income peers is related to summer learning opportunities or the lack thereof. Through the HOLA (Hale Outdoor Learning Adventures) program and Courageous Sailing’s “Swim Sail Science!” program, these partners are able to provide an intensive 5-week experience that combines academics, hands-on environmental science and traditional summer camp and boating activities.
