Being able to run this half marathon for breast cancer research is an experience that is very near to my heart. I'll never forget those last peaceful moments I had with my loving grandmother, Joan Weber, before she passed away from breast cancer. She still had a smile on her face as she held my hand and told me that "life is for the living" and that I should make the most of every moment of it. I'll always remember her as the selfless caring and happy person that she was.

Above all she was strong. During the May of 1964 she lost her husband in a military training accident and had three children to raise on her own. My Father, Aunt, and Uncle were so lucky to have such a strong mother caring for them and I know she had that strength with her as she battled breast cancer.

As an elementary school teacher, she always had that caring and motherly instinct and I'll never forget those joyous visits to grandma's house.

As I run through the 13.1 miles I know she will be right there with me in my heart. In raising money for the Edith Sanford Foundation, I hope that their research can someday put an end to breast cancer so that the world will never lose another angel like Joan Weber to this terrible disease.
