BENEFITING: OneSky for all children
ORGANIZER: OneSky for all children
For more than 15 years, Half the Sky has worked to bring nurturing care into the lives of children living in China’s welfare institutions. Together with 1500 nannies, teachers, foster parents and support staff, we have strived to ensure that every orphaned child knows what it feels like to be loved.
Children like LongYu, who at three was found wandering and alone on the streets of Chengdu. When brought to our Half the Sky center, she did not speak. She would not let anybody touch her. She constantly scratched at her arms and legs. Her new caregivers applied soothing ointments and tried to comfort her, but she would not be held. When a teacher or a child in our preschool approached LongYu, she reached out to scratch them. LongYu entered our Family Village where her new mama observed her closely. Whenever LongYu reached out to scratch, she gently but firmly turned the scratch into a handshake and said, “I want to hold you and love you, my little LongYu, but I will wait for you to be ready.” It took a year, but those scratches turned into caresses, and then into hugs and smiles. Today, at six, LongYu’s teachers call her their “Sunshine Girl.”
Before Half the Sky, a child like LongYu would have spent her days huddled in corners or tied to a potty chair. Without stimulation, without hugs, and certainly without love. Please help us help more children like LongYu become the Sunshine Girls they were born to be.
