The HALO Trust is the world's oldest and largest humanitarian landmine clearance organization. Our mission, "Getting mines out of the ground, now," has guided our humanitarian operations around the globe since 1988.
Beyond the risk of death or severe physical harm, minefields leave rural populations mired in a continuous cycle of poverty. The presence of landmines and unexploded ordnance prevents farmers from planting their fields or grazing their livestock. Mined roads and paths block trade and safe access to water. Aid agencies are hesitant to visit mined areas to implement health and education projects.
HALO, made famous by Princess Diana's minefield visit in 1997, currently employs over 8,000 deminers in Afghanistan, Angola, Cambodia, Colombia, Georgia/Abkhazia, Kosovo, Mozambique, Nagorno Karabakh, Sri Lanka and Somaliland.
Since 1988, HALO has destroyed 1.3 million landmines, 12 million items of larger-caliber ordnance, 128,000 assault rifles and 50 million bullets. These efforts have returned over 380,000 acres of safe land to poor communities around the world.
As a result of HALO's global work, thousands of minefields have become cornfields, homes have been rebuilt and children can now walk to school knowing their next step will be a safe one.
