Dear friends, Back on My Fee…
Dear friends, Back on My Feet heroes,

On behalf of Back on My Feet, I wanted to express our gratitude for your generous contributions to the noble cause of helping the homeless regain self-sufficiency, through running.

On Sunday I completed my second marathon (in addition to four others that were part of an Ironman) in my personal best time of 3.09. Thank you so much for your support to get there! Stating my goal openly to you made me feel accountable to achieve it and I dug deep when things got tough and winds tried to blow us off the streets of New York City!

The most memorable experience of the New York City Marathon was a Saturday brunch with participants of the Back on My Feet program, most of whom were homeless just a year ago, but were running the marathon on Sunday!

I spent some time talking to Barry Pope.

Last Thanksgiving Barry was getting evicted. His cable was getting cut off. He wanted to go take a break somewhere. In his mind this break would be temporary as he hoped to get some money soon to buy drugs. He ran across the Samaritan Village that gave him shelter. He felt somewhat restricted in his new home but noticed a happy group of people who were hugging all the time and getting out, going for a run early in the mornings. He decided to give Back on My Feet a try, as he wanted to get out a bit. He could barely run two blocks on his first try. He kept at it and when he completed 4 miles to get an official Four Miler designation, he knew this break was no longer temporary. He had gotten too used to the awesome hugs from his support group. He had not been hugged in years before this! Barry now works two jobs, at UPS and Goodwill, he is taking classes and is training for the marathon, his kind of an Ironman he told me. He will soon get his commercial driver license and will be able to do just one job, his dream job. He has not been able to drive in years due to his license being suspended. He has now been clean for 12 months and Back On My Feet has enabled him this dream. Barry thanks all of you for making this a reality. He would never have believed this last Thanksgiving. His family used to call him a quitter, on Sunday he became a Finisher! His motto was 5 Boroughs, 5 Bridges, 5 Hours! He finished the race in 5.38.

Thank you again for the memorable experience and making the world a better place!

Hugs,
Hana

Stuff About Me:

Encountering homelessness in the Big Apple on a daily basis, I am excited to have the opportunity to help fellow New Yorkers get back on their feet through running!

I am pledging to raise $123 per mile for Back on My Feet as I prepare to complete my second New York City Marathon on November 2nd.

Back on My Feet is dedicated to creating independence and self-sufficiency within the homeless and other underserved populations by first engaging them in running as a means to build confidence, strength and self-esteem.

Having been an athlete all my life, sometimes I forget how much running has helped shape who I am. Staying focused growing up, being able to study in the United States, meeting wonderful people to making it all the way to New York City can all be attributed to what running has taught me. I realize that setting goals for myself that are just outside of my comfort zone initally, then achieving them, makes me believe that anything is possible - starting with my first marathon to competing in the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii...That confidence has helped me in all aspects of my life, and I know it helps those who need to get back on their feet!

For this marathon on November 2nd, I have also set a personal best target to break 3 hours. Can you help me get there by supporting Back on My Feet?

Your support is much appreciated!

Let's go run!
