This is Handsome, a young male Boxer pulled from Carson City Shelter on February 2nd, 2015.
When Karma Rescue contacted me regarding fostering Handsome I felt compelled to provide him the love and stability he had so clearly been deprived until then. The next morning I met Handsome for the first time. At 43 lbs, covered in open wounds and infected sores, bleeding from his head and ears, missing fur and walking with an obvious limp, the name 'Handsome' still seemed entirely suited to the dog before me. Handsome's loving disposition and unfettered optimism shined through.
Now, almost 6 weeks later, his physical state has improved such that it is difficult to imagine that the dog pictured was once in such a sad state. He is nearly unrecognizable in his early photographs. This dog, whom was obviously subject to neglect, abuse, and the elements (including a reported canine vs. vehicle on the Carson Freeway), has not given any indication of pain throughout my time working with him. Handsome did not flinch nor whimper during intrusive and often notably uncomfortable veterinary examinations and procedures, nor during his suture removal, nor during his medicated baths, nor during his painful passing of plastic objects consumed while living on the street. So, when he collapsed mid-stride after an afternoon at the dog park, I knew we needed to have him seen immediately.
Handsome has severe hip damage, and he is loyal, happy, and loving to his own detriment. At only 2 years old, he exudes a goofy and vibrant quality despite suffering devastating hip-pain on a daily basis. His desire to play, snuggle, explore and accompany me on outings breaks my heart now that I know he does so despite the nearly bone-on-bone grinding he experiences with each movement. I want this animal to experience the fun, cuddles, adventure and companionship he is so enthusiastic about without pain. I look forward to the day Handsome is adopted, but more, I want him to be physically able to experience the unqualified love and joy he will undoubtedly offer his forever family. I hope you will help.
