One of the hardest things in life is having to watch children go through such a burden as cancer. I personally don't know any child who has gone through it, but I do understand the hardship of this battle. My dad was diagnosed with oral cancer about 6 months ago. It was such a shock and very difficult to deal with. While he received radiation therapy on his neck and mouth area, he had to get a feeding tube because he could no longer eat solids or even drink water! He could barely talk, and the worst part was for me (his only child) to see him so weak. So, the only way I could help him was to stay strong and not cry in front of him. During this time, his dad (my Grandad) was diagnosed with colon cancer. He is now undergoing chemo-therapy and for now seems okay, but soon will begin to feel the effects of those chemicals in his body killing off the cancer. As a daughter and granddaughter, I am supporting the Children's Hospital in NOLA and am running to help fundraise as much money as I can for their benefit. And to hopefully inspire other hospitals in other states to invest in marathon fundraisers such as these. My Mom and I came up with the motto "Hang In There!" Well, maybe we weren't the first to create this saying but we did make a design and custom printed some shirts to help our family get through these tough times, and I'll sure be wearing mine at the marathon!
