BENEFITING: Conservators' Center
The Conservators’ Center in Burlington, North Carolina is home to nearly 100 exotic animals representing 19 species – including more than 30 lions and tigers. This haven for wild animals in need of a home has a 3-part mission: education, conservation, and rescue.
We are dedicated to providing these residents with the highest possible quality of care, especially when it comes to protecting each one of them from inclement weather.
Hansen’s Pride is a family unit at the Conservators’ Center consisting of Hansen Lion and his two ladies, Willow and Adeena. To prevent breeding within this group, Willow and Adeena have thus far been treated with special birth-control implants to inhibit their cycling. Because these implants must be replaced yearly and require the lionesses to be anesthetized, Hansen has been recently vasectomized and the girls will now return to their natural process of going in and out of heat.
Based on typical pride dynamics and lion behavior, it is a safe assumption that while one of the lionesses is cycling, the other one may be unwelcome in the same shift space. As a result, we are asking $5500* to add a new area for our animals keepers to shift individuals to during their daily cleaning. It will also be useful, if not critical, when we need to do maintenance work in this enclosure; the shift space would ensure a safe and peaceful space for both of Hansen’s sweet lion ladies.
This project also includes an upgrade in insulation for the lions’ denbox to provide them the coziest space possible during what we believe are colder winters to come. Once funded, the new shift space will be built large enough to accomodate future den space if necessary.
Please give what you can to this special cause. We encourage you to come visit us, meet our lion prides, and awaken your wild side!
*The estimated cost of this project includes material and labor. Any funds raised above the amount shown will go directly to our Animal Care Fund.
