Happy Forest Happy Chicken
Organized by: Mariko Foster
February 27, 2017
EVENT DATE Feb 26, 2017
I will be running the Tokyo Marathon in February 2017 as a charity runner for a project run by the Tokyo Development Foundation to replant and regrow Japan's man-made forests into natural forests. This project has been supported by a dear family friend, C. W. Nicol, for a long time. If you suffer from hay fever/ pollen allergies, then you want to support this project too!
Some history--after WWII, there was a policy in Japan to replant forest area with economically productive trees. This resulted in planting a single species of Japanese cedar, which grows quickly and produces commercially useful wood. While this seemed like a good idea at the time, it has resulted in unprecedented levels hay fever and pollen related allergies. For those of you who do not live in Japan, this may seem silly or an over-exaggeration and hardly a reason to run 26+ miles. But it is not--just ask my mom. The man-made forests have also resulted in soil erosion and harm to wildlife habitats.
I am also running the marathon as a Happy Chicken (hence this fundraiser's title), which is a group of friends who like to run and find Portlandia funny.
