BENEFITING: OCEANS HARBOR HOUSE INC
ORGANIZER: OCEANS HARBOR HOUSE INC
EVENT: OceanFirst Charity Challenge
EVENT DATE: Jun 06, 2014
As many of you may already know, I have worked as a counselor at Ocean’s Harbor House for the past 7 years. During this time I have worked with hundreds of teens who have challenged me to become a stronger, more compassionate, patient person. What I have learned working with these kids is incomparable to anything I could learn in a book or class. To say my job is challenging, would be an understatement. Often I leave feeling unsuccessful, unappreciated, and exhausted, but I return the next day, with hopefully the same dedication and passion I had when I started at Harbor House. This is because of the kids. While it may be easy to describe the negatives of working at Harbor House, the positives are indescribable. It is both the small and great successes I see which keep me loving what I do. It is the ability to be a part of these successes, and something much bigger than one day’s work. I can’t describe the feeling when a parent or child thanks you for a positive change in their life. I can’t describe the feeling when a teen shares with you something they have never told anyone else. I can’t describe the feeling when a teen comes from an abusive home, with no hope for the present or the future, and slowly learns to trust and care. I have been lucky enough to have former clients reach out to me when they graduate high school, obtain a job, build a healthy relationship, or just want to say hello. I have been privileged to write a college recommendation for a client who couldn’t think beyond the current moment when he was removed from his home and came to Harbor House. There is no way to describe being a part of this growth.
I ask you to consider how donating to Harbor House will not only impact the lives of the kids who come through the doors, but also those people who are lucky enough to be a part of their lives. Not only will your donation go directly to supporting our youth, but it will help Harbor House's chances to win $10,000 from OceanFirst Foundation!
Each year across the country there are an estimated 1.6 million homeless youth. The rate of homeless youth in your community may seem slim, but the reality is different. In Ocean and Monmouth Counties, there are an estimated 300 homeless kids. Many are running away from abusive or neglectful homes, drug stricken families, violence, or the death of their guardian. It may be hard to recognize them because they couch surf, sleep on our beaches, under boardwalks, or on local buses and trains. Many of our homeless youth feel invisible at times, but by joining our sleep-out we can show them they are not alone. We will let them know we see their struggles, and there is somewhere they can turn for help.
On Friday, June 6th, 2014 Harbor House will be hosting their first ever sleep-out event to raise awareness and support our youth. We are asking YOU to sleep out with us for one night to save the life of a homeless kid. If interested in joining our sleep-out register online today at http://www.oceansharborhouse.org/
