Every year, our shelter takes in about 4,000 animals – not only dogs and cats, but also reptiles, birds, livestock, rabbits, horses, rodents, wildlife, and even fish!
We are an open admission shelter, which means we do not turn anyone away who is looking to surrender their pet. However, we can (and do) offer alternatives and counseling to try and prevent the surrender!
While we are not currently a no-kill shelter, we're working hard to increase our live release rate through aggressive adoption promotions and other innovative programs, with help from caring friends like you!
We are not affiliated with the Humane Society of the United States! Many people think we are a branch of HSUS, because the words “Humane Society” are in our name, but actually we are an independent 501c3 nonprofit, and do not receive funding from them. Please donate locally!
We are the only municipal shelter in all of Harford County. That means not only do we take in animals from citizens of our county, but also any animals picked up as stray, or seized by animal control. We care for animals that come in as the result of hoarding, abuse and/or neglect, and dogfighting cases. Many of these are in horrific shape and require extensive medical and behavioral rehabilitation.
We are the first place to call if you lose or find an animal in Harford County. We maintain a lost and found registry for animals in our county, so make sure we are your first call at 410-836-1090.
We have an active volunteer and foster program, and we love these wonderful folks who give so much of their time and energy to our animals and to make our jobs easier! They're crucial to our success, so we're always looking for more great folks to grow these lifesaving programs!
We partner with vets and pet supply stores around the county (including one in Baltimore County) who graciously allow us to keep adoptable cats in their locations!
Our website, www.harfordshelter.org, is chock full of info and resources, and we have a presence on social media outlets like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Pinterest! Friend and follow us!
We support our troops through the Pets for Patriots program! Through this partnership, Pets for Patriots will connect our area’s loyal service men and women to HSHC, and HSHC will introduce them to eligible homeless dogs and cats that are looking for permanent homes, and there are other great benefits to this program as well!
We offer an eight-week dog training course and free dog behavioral consultations, in order to prevent dogs from being surrendered or returned to the shelter. In partnership with Mutt Magic, classes and consultations are offered regularly on our campus!
We opened a brand new, state of the art 19,000 sq. ft. shelter facility in early 2016 and hired a full-time veterinarian. Very soon we will open our surgical suite, so for the first time in our 70-year history, every animal adopted from us will be spayed or neutered!
If you can't adopt, you can sponsor the adoption fee for one (or more!) of our animals? By sponsoring a pet, their adoption fee is waived, which says to potential adopters, "I'm special!" and may encourage them to take a closer look!
