BENEFITING: HARLEM GROWN
If camp was a part of your summer break, you probably vividly remember how excited you were to start your first day at camp, eager to see friends you hadn’t seen in months, and knowing you had weeks of fun creating lasting memories. You were going to have the opportunity to learn new skills, improve others and broaden your outlook on the world.
Many of the children we serve don’t have that opportunity. Without Harlem Grown’s free summer camp, many would spend their summer days indoors with little to look forward except long, muggy days in the city or on the streets looking for things to occupy their days. Harlem Grown runs a free, seven-week summer camp for low-‐income youth in Harlem and the South Bronx designed to engage youth in farming, nutrition, and healthy lifestyle choices.
This year, with your help, we plan to serve over 50 campers! They will be with Harlem Grown every weekday between July 5th and August 18th. With two trips each week to farms throughout New York and Connecticut, campers will be engaged and challenged to think about science, farming, nutri:on, and leadership in creative new ways.
Your donations will go towards helping to underwrite the cost of camp for all families living close to or below the poverty line, which last year was 97% of our campers. The cost per camper is only $2,500, and with this campaign we're hoping to cover the cost of ten campers.
I’m confident that you all believe, as do we, that our youth deserve a summer camp experience that is both fun and engaging regardless of their ability to pay. Your support, big or small, makes possible a vibrant program, healthy meals, trips, and all the wonderful activities of camp. You are ensuring that our campers will be able to create those lasting memories and learn how to live a healthier, more sustainable life.
You are ensuring that our children do not fall vic:m to summer learning loss and stay on track to succeed in school. Throughout the summer you will learn just exactly how your contribution is making a difference through camper stories and news from the ground!
