Harlem Books and Breakfast
Organized by: Monica Thompson
It is the hope of everyone involved, in the Harlem Books and Breakfast initiative, to create a platform for the youth and families of Harlem to come together to learn, share and inspire. Through providing a free breakfast, facilitating activities/events that promote that we hope to enhance each participant's sense of agency in both their immediate community and society at large. This is a grassroots-led initiative and all supplies/resources have been fronted by leading members of the group. To maintain the financial sustainability of this program, we are looking to you, the community to help us, help Harlem.
We are going to use any acquired funding for the following items:
1. Space rental- Currently, our space cost $125 for each monthly event.
2. Food/miscellaneous supplies- We estimate that this would cost us about $200 each month. Breakfast is a key feature in our program as it is one of most commonly skipped meals and serving it will serve to help build cohesion and community.
3. Books- We have a current working library of about 110 books. Book are provided to each child that attends the event and we are working to create a book return system. We are working to double our existing library and to create a comprehensive book list of varying reading levels/age groups that focus on cultural/gender/social justice. This would likely be our greatest programmatic expense, but we currently have an Amazon Wishlist that you can contribute too as well. Every contribution helps.
