BENEFITING: HARLEM GROWN
Harlem parents are growing baby greens...lettuce that is!
Harlem Grown is launching it’s new Greenhouse Apprenticeship program for unemployed school parents at the hydroponic greenhouse. Working to grow and supply Harlem with fresh, nutritious and affordable leafy greens, Harlem Grown operates a hydroponic greenhouse on 134th Street in Central Harlem. The new Greenhouse Apprenticeship program will implement a job-training program for unemployed parents from Harlem Grown’s partnering schools to work at the greenhouse.
In Harlem, three out of four families are headed by a single parent, the median income of $25,800 is half that of New York City as a whole and the unemployment rate is three times higher. The Greenhouse Apprenticeship program offers parents in the program living wages and flexible work hours - so they are able to work while their children are in school and increase their knowledge of sustainability and health.
The Greenhouse Apprenticeship program will teach the trainees sustainable agriculture, community development, and business skills. The trainees will grow, cultivate, harvest, package, assist with marketing and selling the produce, and receive workforce development.
We need your help to make this program a reality. Please give us your support today and help our parents grow some baby greens!
