When I added my name to the lottery for the 2011 New York City Marathon nearly 8 months ago, I knew that my chances of winning a place in the world-famous race were pretty slim. When my name was drawn and I learned that I had somehow won one of those coveted slots, I knew I couldn’t pass up this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! But I also knew that I had a long road ahead to get ready for my first marathon. At the time, 2 or 3 miles was the most I’d ever attempted, a far cry from the 26.2 mile route I'll be running the first Sunday in November. Training for this race has been one of the most intense and challenging things I’ve ever done. But I've stuck with it, one step at a time, and it's been an overwhelmingly positive experience. Today I feel like a new person. I’m in the best shape of my life, I’m running 25 to 35 miles a week, and I’m anxiously counting down the last few weeks until the big day!
Since this is my first marathon, I knew I'd want to run for something bigger than just me. I knew I needed to do my best to channel this positive energy into something with a more far-reaching effect. So I partnered with Harlem RBI, an award-winning non-profit organization dedicated to providing inner-city youth in my neighborhood with extra-curricular sports and academic programs. For 20 years HRBI has played a critical role in East Harlem, helping kids stay healthy and active, giving them something positive to be a part of, teaching basic life skills, and encouraging them to stay in school and graduate as confident, college-bound, work-ready citizens. And the kids in HRBI's programs are really succeeding! 58% of kids in East Harlem drop out of school, while 99% of HRBI’s kids graduate. Only 13% of adults in East Harlem hold a college degree, while 93% of HRBI’s kids are accepted to college. HRBI is making a real difference in thousands of lives and I’m proud to be running my first marathon on their behalf!
Join me in supporting a cause I believe in. Help me reach my goal of raising $100 per mile on their behalf. Your donation, no matter how large or small, will serve as motivation for me on marathon day. More importantly, your donation will give East Harlem kids a much-needed advantage in life. Thanks for your support!
