BENEFITING: Harlem RBI
ORGANIZER: Harlem RBI
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2011
I’m running the 2011 New York City Marathon on November 6th to raise money for Harlem RBI, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Harlem RBI is a unique, year-round development program based in East Harlem, New York that provides inner-city youth with opportunities to play, learn and grow.
Since its founding in 1991, Harlem RBI has grown to serve more than 1,000 boys and girls annually, ages 5-21, providing them with year-round sports, educational and enrichment activities. In 2008, Harlem RBI responded to the need for better access to education and opened DREAM Charter School. DREAM is a model learning environment with high expectations, a strong culture of care, and a vision of student success and excellence. Its mission is to educate East Harlem children through a comprehensive K-8 program that builds a community of passionate lifelong learners.
Because this is my first marathon, I wanted to be involved with a charity that’s based in New York and has a real focus on the community. I took a look at the work they did and immediately wanted to be on the road with them for all 26.2 miles. I’m grateful that there are organizations like Harlem RBI that provide young people opportunities to recognize their full potential and develop a strong sense of self-worth. As a loyal New Yorker of almost 10 years, I’m so thrilled that I get to fulfill my marathon dream in the city that I love, all while being connected to a cause I believe in.
