Have Cane Will Travel
Organized by: Rebecca Morgan
Blindness can occur at anytime, it can occur to anyone, of any religion, race, or socio-economic background. it occurred to my father as a 15 year old boy who had meningitis in rural Mississippi in the 1950's. As our population ages, as our Veterans return from 3 wars, as industrial accidents, gun violence and diabetes climb in numbers, thus does the number of unserved clients in my area of expertise, Orientation and Mobility, also known as white cane travel. To be able to travel independently, is the key to success as a blind or low vision person. Returning blind Veteran Richard Hoover, stated in 1945, that "we must get moving" and he created one of the cane methods used by blind persons to travel safely and with confidence wherever they may need to go. Our returning Veterans today are young, they want to continue on with their lives and contribute, this independence brought about through effective teaching in Orientation and Mobility is what enables them to be secure and confident to tackle all obstacles that may come their way. Having been raised by a blind father who hitchhiked across this nation totally blind with his totally blind best friend in the 1960's, I want to follow in his footsteps in many ways. One of the purposes of this fundraiser is to purchase an Airstream Sport, hitch it to the back of my car, and go all over the U.S. offering my services not only to our Veterans, but there are many rural and urban blind people who simply are not getting the services promised by the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), due to extreme shortages in my field. I also know Braille, daily living skills and am working on my sign language skills for the deaf/blind. I have an extensive history of volunteerism and work with the blind and have many blind persons who would gladly tell you that I have changed their lives by putting that cane in their hands and teaching them how to use it. Won't you help me with my endeavors, there is nothing more rewarding than helping someone who truly needs it and appreciates it. I would live and work out of the airstream, and all funding would go towards my insurance, my travel expenses, and direct services I provide. I have been an Itinerant Orientation and Mobility Instructor, usually located in a school district or area. My goal is to expand being an itinerant and take services nationwide, with the hope of staying in one location with several clients for at least 3 month intervals. Please feel free to contact me should you have further questions, I do hope that once the project gets going, it expands, grows and continues. Thank you so much for your time, consideration and heartfelt generosity.
