Ethiopia has arguably the best running culture in the entire world and running is a part of the country’s wonderful history and a part of people’s daily lives. Along with Ethiopia’s saga of generating some of the world’s top distance runners, comes with the challenge for future generations to live up to the prestigious reputation laid out before them. This concept plays true for not only running, but for education and advocacy of Ethiopia’s youth for the future of the country. What could be better than running in the cradle of humanity, in a country where running is deeply engrained into daily life and a country that is full of rich culture and history? The answer: running to help educate Ethiopian youth and to provide them with the knowledge and resources needed to face the challenges of the future. Education through running is about as good as it gets.
About The Run:
With this incredible running history in mind and the desire to provide equal educational opportunities to all of Ethiopia’s youth, we aim to act as the link between several different organizations and the youth of Ethiopia. My name is Ryan Plourde and my runner partner and co-developer of this initiavie is Benjamin Morse. We are both current Peace Corps Volunteers living and working in the Tigray Region of Northern Ethiopia. At the end of October we will embark on a 282 KM run through Northern Ethiopia; running from Benjamin’s town to my town in just eight days. We will be stopping in communities along the way to discuss important issues facing our region and country and raising awareness and support to continue the progress that is currently being made. We will address a different social topic in each of our eight destinations including: nutrition, HIV/AIDS, hand washing, exam cheating and school pride, exercise, gender equality, tuberculosis, people living with disabilities, and environment. We want to pay homage to a place that has become our 2nd home and to raise money and awareness to what is quite possibly the most important issue facing Ethiopia today: the access to a quality education. We will run through the Tigray region in support of imagine1day and their efforts to provide an education to the beautiful children of Ethiopia.
We have seen firsthand the importance of having an equal opportunity to receive a quality education, but we realize that the gap is still very large and a lot of work needs to be done. Thanks to wonderful organizations like imagine1day, education has become a priority for Ethiopia and we are starting to see their significant impact across the country. Our hope is that through this run we are able to increase awareness abroad, while simultaneously raising funds that will go towards the efforts of imagine1day here in Ethiopia.
