BENEFITING: HARPSWELL COASTAL ACADEMY INC
EVENT DATE: Mar 15, 2014
Harpswell Coastal Academy is a first year public charter school in Maine. One of our founding principles is to focus on local- students eat local food, learn about the local economy, and study local social and scientific issues. A key aspect of "local" in Harpswell is getting out on the water.
Our goal is to create a sustainable sailing program where students will be fully immersed in the rich traditions of the mariner. They will learn not only maritime skills such as navigation, ship handling, and safety, but also the invaluable life skills of leadership, responsibility, and teamwork. We will see academic integration with projects in marine science, physics and history. We want to break down the barriers that exist between Maine’s public school students and exploration of the natural world.
We cannot do any of this without your support. At this initial stage, our club is solely supported by the community. In the future we will be a sustainable program, funded partially by summer charters and educational summer camps. We need to raise $5,000 by March 15th for our Board of Directors to accept the generous donation of an Irwin 38’. This money will go towards launching, maintenance, equipment, insurance and coast guard inspections and will be hugely appreciated by myself, a merry group of sailing enthusiast students, and all of the students who will soon hear the call of the sea.
Thank you for your support!
