The Story

EVENT DATE: May 05, 2013

DEADLINE TO GIVE: Jun 05, 2013

Dear Friend,

In 2011, George Guyer was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, the second most common type of leukemia in adults. George was a loving family man who would help anyone and who was always strong in both character and ability. George was my dad, and watching him become weaker and weaker was so hard.

Hospice enabled us to care for dad at home. We all felt a connection to the nurses and aides. They supported him as a whole person – physically, emotionally, spiritually and mentally. Hospice treats the person -- not the disease. Hospice staff cared for my dad with compassion and dignity, and they also cared for my family!

As a result of this personal experience, I am now a Hospice volunteer for Home & Community Health Services and I am coordinating the agency’s First Annual George Guyer Memorial Hospice Remembrance Walk on May 5, 2013.

Walkers of all ages are invited to walk at their own pace to help raise funds for the H&HCS Hospice Program. This First Annual event will be held at the Asnuntuck Community College track.  Registration begins at 9:00 a.m., with the walk and butterfly release at 10:00 a.m.

Complimentary refreshments will await walkers at the finish line. To make this a special day, there will be a number of family oriented activities on-site, including music, face painting, energy therapy and massage, local vendors and more.

Walkers may participate individually, with their families, or as part of a team with family, friends, co-workers or schoolmates. Registration is $25 per person, (Children 12 and under free) and we encourage you create your own fundraisin page here to have your friends and family make a pledge on your behalf. Your fundraising page can link directly to your social media (Facebook, Twitter and others) so its easy to spread the word!  Any walker who contributes $50 or more, including the registration fee and pledges, will receive a free water bottle.

Please join me in supporting the wonderful people at H&CHS Hospice by participating in this event, to ensure that patients and families in our community continue to benefit from H&CHS’ loving care.

p.s. PLEASE NOTE: This page is intended for you to help raise funds for our cause. Please don't forget to register for the event at

Thanks so much for your help!
