THE STORY:

THE DONATION
A Nucletron V2 High Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy Afterloader
1. For the first time in the history of Senegal, we can cure patients with gynecological cancer.
2. We will save more lives, and have fewer life-altering side effects for patients with skin cancer and breast cancer.
3. We will be able to drastically improve outcome and have drastically fewer life-altering side effects for prostate cancer.
51,362 USD is still needed to complete the purchase of the HDR machine.
WHY RADIATING HOPE?
1. Radiating Hope is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. All donations are tax deductible.
2. Radiating Hope is 100% Volunteer.
3. 100% of your donation goes directly to finalizing the purchase of the HDR unit.
4. The dedicated staff for Radiating Hope even pays for plane tickets, food, and housing out of their own pockets, to ensure that each donation is maximized.
5. The clinical staff for Radiating Hope is a group of dedicated radiation oncology medical physicists and radiation oncologists. We are dedicated toward creating a safe, sustainable, and efficient environment at Institut Curie.

This is not the typical equipment donation program where a machine is shipped, and the receiving staff is left to fend for themselves. This could be extremely dangerous, as well as useless at times as many machines go unused after a short period of time because of maintenance or user problems. Our staff maintains a daily and weekly communication with the hospital staff at Institut Curie to ensure that any questions are answered and that treatments remain effective as well as safe. We have dedicated our time for years to ensure that we make a lasting impact on the lives of the people of Senegal.
THE NEED
Cancer is a major health concern throughout Africa. With the majority of national and international medical funding being funneled to infectious disease prevention and treatment, little support has been given to treatment of patients with cancer throughout Africa as well as in Senegal. In developing nations, cancer kills more people than HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria combined. In the latest United Nations conference, a statement was made about the imminent need for additional funding and training for cancer treatment in developing nations.

This year, after releasing a survey on the conditions for cancer detection and treatment in developing nations, the World Health Organization made the statement: “Cancer should not be a death sentence anywhere in the world as there are proven ways to prevent and cure many cancers.”

Senegal is no exception to the above information. I have seen first-hand during my months of work over more than three years at Institut Curie as a visiting medical physicist that with the addition of technology and training, many lives could be saved. We cannot bring back those lives that have been lost, but we can work toward preventing those unnecessary losses in the future.

Starting in December of 2012, Radiating Hope installed a high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy machine at Institut Curie and has had three trips comprising of more than a dozen radiation oncologists and medical physicists from the USA and Canada to train the staff at Institut Curie on the intricate procedures involved with this new technology. Because of how the radiation is delivered, this HDR machine is allowing for the first time in the history of Senegal to actively cure cervical cancer patients (a readily curable disease with the appropriate technology). According to the World Health Organization, approximately 34 percent of cancer cases for women in West Africa are cervical cancer. At Institut Curie, this number is even higher, at approximately 40 percent. Only with the combination of the Co-60 machine (already at Institut Curie) and the HDR machine (installed by Radiating Hope) can this 40 percent of the women at Institut Curie be cured.

Radiating Hope is already looking toward the future, working with the staff at Institut Curie to combat other forms of cancer that are presently not curable (or are not acceptable modern treatments) at Institut Curie using a Cobalt 60 machine alone. We are planning to send a number of other groups to train the staff at Institut Curie on HDR brachytherapy of the skin as well as to give partial breast irradiation to boost surgical resection of breast cancer (in addition to treatments such as prostate cancer which can lead to better outcomes than treatments on Cobalt 60 machines for prostate cancers of particular PSA and Gleason score). Approximately 25% of all patients treated at Institut Curie are breast patients, and around 10% are skin cancer (though this percentage could rise with the new treatment modality which would allow for the first time in Senegal to adequately treat this specific disease). Neither treatment can be performed currently at Institut Curie with only a Cobalt 60 machine. However, these readily curable diseases will be adequately treated with the addition of the HDR brachytherapy machine and the subsequent teaching of various techniques by the staff at Radiating Hope.

In time, the HDR brachytherapy machine could easily save many lives or drastically improve the outcome of a particular treatment for more than half the patients treated at Institut Curie.

Radiating Hope has begun the process of securing the HDR machine at Institut Curie. The machine, a Nucletron V2 HDR afterloader, is valued at approximately 500,000 USD. Although Nucletron (the manufacturer) made a preferential offer, at this point an amount of 51,362 USD is still needed to complete the purchase of the HDR unit. As a result, we are seeking help from our medical colleagues, as well as friends and family, to finalize the funding for this life-saving machine. Any contribution will make a lasting impact on the lives of the Senegalese for many years to come.

As project director for Radiating Hope, and as a loyal medical volunteer and friend to the staff at Institut Curie, I greatly appreciate your donation and the lives that it will save for many years to come.

50 USD Donation
For a 50 USD donation, you will receive a picture of a patient whose life will be saved, along with a story about that patient’s life, and the impact that your donation made on that person’s life. You will receive a Thank You letter signed by a staff member of Radiating Hope, as well as a staff member at Institut Curie. This is also a great, inspirational gift idea.

100 USD Donation
For a 100 USD donation, you will receive everything from the 50 USD donation. But you will also receive a hand-written thank you letter, written to you, from a patient in Senegal treated with the HDR machine that you helped to donate. This would be a wonderful addition to any office, and a talking point with family, friends, colleagues, patients, etc. This is also a great, inspirational gift idea.

500 USD Donation
For a 500 USD donation, you will receive everything from the 250, 100, and 50 USD donations. But you will also have your name (or the name of a loved one to honor) (or a company name or logo) listed on a plaque hanging on the walls of Institut Curie where the HDR unit is located. Your donation will be forever honored in the halls of where the new life-saving technology exists. We will send you a framed picture of a patient standing next to the plaque, as well as a close up image of your listed name. This would be a wonderful addition to any home or office, and a talking point with family, friends, colleagues, patients, etc. This is also a great, inspirational gift idea.

1000 USD Donation
For a 1000 USD donation, you will receive everything from the 500, 250, 100, and 50 USD donations. But instead of having your name (or the name of a loved one) (or a company name or logo) listed on a plaque with the other 500 USD donors, you will have an individual plaque hanging on the wall of Institut Curie outside of the HDR suite. You will have the opportunity to specify what you would like this plaque to say. We will send you a picture of a patient standing next to your individual plaque. This would be a wonderful addition to any home or office, and a talking point with family, friends, colleagues, patients, etc. This is also a great, inspirational gift idea.

5000 USD Donation
For a 5000 USD donation, you will receive everything from the 1000, 250, 100, and 50 USD donations.
