BENEFITING: Huntington's Disease Society of America, Inc.
EVENT DATE: Nov 01, 2015
Thank you for taking the time to visit my fundraising page.
I am running the New York City Marathon this November to raise money for the Huntington's Disease Society of America, and I need your help. But first, let me tell you what has brought me to this important organization.
My father had Huntington's Disease. HD is a degenerative neurological disorder that affects a wide variety of the victim's mental and physical capacities, damaging their ability to speak, move, and think. It is a terminal disease, causing death by slowly removing the individual's ability to function, eventually causing death by a variety of complications such as pnuemonia, heart disease, or choking. My father spent the last two years of his life in hospice care, and in 2011 he lost his decade-long battle with HD.
HD is only transmitted genetically, and every child with a parent who has HD will have a 50% chance of also having HD. This past summer I went forward with genetic testing to reveal if I had received the disease from my father, a step that less than 5% of at-risk children are willing to undertake. Thankfully, I do not have HD, but there are others out there who are not as lucky as I am, which is why I am raising money for the Huntington's Disease Society of America.
The Huntington's Disease Society of America is the premier nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of everyone affected by Huntington’s disease. From community services and education to advocacy and research, HDSA is the world’s leader in providing help for today and hope for tomorrow for people with Huntington’s disease and their families.
HDSA's network of chapters, affiliates, HDSA Centers of Excellence, social workers and support groups provides a seamless connection for help, education and outreach to HD families and health care professionals across the United States.
All funds raised will help support HDSA's Mission of helping those affected by HD and their families.
With your generous donation, HDSA will be able to improve the lives of those who are already suffering from HD, ease the burden for caregivers dealing with HD from the outside, and fund research to someday alleviate effect of the disease or even prevent its occurance. I hope that you can find it in yourself to make a donation to my fundraising campaign, but if not, I only ask that you spread the word. With your help, we can make HD not just a personal issue but a national one.
And I promise you won't have to dump ice water on your head.
