Headstone for Kendra James
Organized by: Black Lives Matter PDX
Kendra Sarie James was a 21 year old mother of two who was murdered by police officer Scott McCollister in Portland, Oregon on May 5, 2003. Kendra was one of the first black women to be killed in police custody whose death sparked a major national outcry against police brutality, especially after the decision was made not to pursue a public inquest into her death. For the past 12 years, Kendra's family has not only struggled with the pain of their loss and a lack of justice on her behalf, they have also had to go without a headstone for her. Please join Black Lives Matter Portland in its attempt to bring healing and justice to her family, beginning with giving them a means to order and inscribe a headstone for Kendra. No family should have to suffer with the pain of such a loss, and support for those families in the event of such a crisis is vital and necessary to the work it takes to build and heal our communities. Our goal is $1,200, and all amounts large or small are appreciated.
