BENEFITING: PARENTS OF MURDERED CHILDREN
Shakanah China, 13, was shot to death in a drive-by in Durham, North Carolina.
Around 7:30 p.m. on Mother's Day 2011, a blue van rolled down Rochelle Street. As the vehicle approached Atka Court, someone inside the van fired several shots.
Shakanah was taken to Duke University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later. Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez has said Shakanah was not the intended target.
A Durham CrimeStoppers reward was announced in July for information leading to an arrest, but four months after the shooting, the murder remains unsolved.
Shakanah’s death made national headlines, but her grave remains unmarked due to financial constraints of the family. You can help give Shakanah a proper resting place by donating to this fundraiser. All funds go directly to Parents of Murdered Children, a non-profit based in North Carolina. The money raised will be used to purchase Shakanah's headstone, which the family would like engraved with a teddy bear on a swing, and the enscription: Playing in God's playground.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Durham Police Investigator Pate at (919) 560-4440 ext. 29332 or CrimeStoppers at (919) 683-1200.
