Help PFAC Bring the Healing Power of Art to Our Veterans
May 26, 2016
BENEFITING: PENINSULA FINE ARTS CENTER INC
EVENT DATE: Jun 01, 2016
Peninsula Fine Arts Center (PFAC) will lead its 5th Year of a Summer Healing Arts Program beginning in June 2016 at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Hampton. Each 4 week session, running June – August, is led by a PFAC Art Therapist.
The goal of the Healing Arts program is to enable Veterans and their families to address the emotional and psychological effects of combat experience with art therapy services provided via a curriculum developed in partnership with EVMS.
The United States Department of Veterans Affairs released a study that covered suicides from 1999 to 2010, which showed that roughly 22 veterans were committing suicide per day, or one every 65 minutes.
The Veterans Affairs Department announced earlier this year that they are “ratcheting up efforts to address the high rate of suicide among veterans, bringing in mental health experts, advocates and affected families to formulate an “action plan” in the coming months to reduce these preventable deaths.” PFAC is proud to be part of solution and healing for our Veterans.
“Healing Arts and Art Therapy is so important because as many as 30% of all Veterans now reportedly struggle with Post-Traumatic-Stress Disorder, suicide, and other mental-health issues,“ said Courtney Gardner, Executive Director of PFAC.
Peninsula Fine Arts Center hopes to raise $5,000 as part of a matching grant secured through private funding by May 31st to continue its work in the field of Healing Arts.
“With your help we'll raise the much needed funds to continue this important program,” added Gardner.
Peninsula Fine Arts Center is located at 101 Museum Drive within Mariners’ Museum Park in Newport News, Va. The center is open from 10:00am to 5:00pm Tuesday through Saturday and 1:00 to 5:00pm Sundays; PFAC is closed on Mondays. Admission is regularly $7.50 for adults, $4 for children (ages 6-12) and free for children 5 and under. Annual membership is $40 for individuals and $60 for families.
