Healing Through Art

Eighty per cent of people living with disabilities live in developing countries, and one in five of people living in poverty have a disability. According to UNICEF, 90% of children with disabilities are excluded from primary education , and one third of all primary-aged children who are not in school are children with disabilities – that’s 25 million worldwide. The inaccessibility to education for children with a disability means that many children’s talents are overlooked and their needs are neglected. In Kibera, which is the largest slum in Kenya, children with special needs have poor access to learning facilities and lack of space to play and develop their social and motor skills.
There is nothing more disabling than the myth that children with disabilities are incapable of making a contribution – on the flip side, there is nothing more empowering than giving children the confidence to do so.
"Healing through art" will provide the children and easy way to express themselves in addition to providing a channel of communication. It will also help them achieve better self-awareness, relief from stress or anxiety and other traumatic experiences. The children targeted include those with learning difficulties, physical and neurological impairement, conditions such as autism, Down's syndrome and cerebral palsy. The art therapy sessions will be held daily with small groups of children participating each day to ensure interactive and individualized sessions.
