Healthcare for Xelaju
Organized by: Emily Damonte
Xela, Quetzaltenango, Guatemala is he second largest city in Guatemala. It has an estimated population of 224,703. The population is about 61% indigenous or Amerindian, 34% Mestizo or ladino and 5% European. Its public health clinic, El Centro de Salud, serves hundreds and hundreds of clients everyday requiring no money from them. Sometimes clients are asked to bring their own needle from the pharmacy for a child's vaccination, or to come back in a month when the required vaccine or desired form of birth control may be available. The large population includes many pregnant women and children. The clinic is in need of equipment such as a Doppler machine and scales to track malnourished children's weight gain. We hope to raise the money possible to provide these much needed supplies to the community.
