BENEFITING: The Global Mountain Fund Inc
For nearly a decade we've been supporting small health clinics in rural Nepal. These clinics make basic health services accessible to thousands of rural villagers near the border with Tibet. It costs an amazing $1.00 per person, per YEAR to hire medical staff and provide basic services. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM: There are no health clinics in many rural villages in Nepal. It is often a full day walk, or more, over rough trails to reach the nearest government health post and often those health posts have no staff or no medicine. Thousands suffer needlessly and are denied the most basic health services including skilled child delivery assistance. Hundreds of women die during unattended child birth and hundreds of children die for lack of the most basic health services. HOW WILL THIS PROJECT SOLVE THE PROBLEM? Since 2005 we've been working with local communities to establish basic health clinics. The village provides a building and we provide the equipment, staff and basic medicine. Villagers pay a token amount, if they are able, for services and medicines, typically the equivalent of a dime for a clinic visit and pennies for medicines. It's a partnership between Mountain Fund and the village. The village has a buy-in and a stake in how these clinics operate. POTENTIAL LONG-TERM IMPACT: The literacy rates in this area are half of the average for the country. People are primarily subsistence farmers. For this area to develop, women and children have to survive. Children cannot learn and become educated if they are not healthy enough to attend school and learn. Health is the base of development in these rural villages. Without health care, life just won't improve. QUOTE FROM HARVARD SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH: Only 49% of rural women receive antenatal care. Only 10% of rural women receive assistant from a trained birth attendant.
