BENEFITING: HEALTH FOR YOUTHS
You can read more about the program from the recent Staten Island Advance article here:
We have applied for additional funding for this program but plan to expand to two other sites in early 2014 and additional sites in late 2014.
A permanent library will be created at each site, consisting of the 160 books (4 copies of each book). Parents/children will be permitted to borrow books, and a tracking system will be maintained. These books will also be used beyond the ten-month period of the grant (the books of the T.E.L.L program will become permanent, with a new cycle begun every year using the same books with a different cohort of participants).
The collection of participant report-cards will be used to measure the outcomes of the direct participants.
The tracking (documentation) of how many times a book is checked out of the library, and to whom, will be used to measure children benefiting indirectly from the program (i.e. children who are checking out books from the library even though they are not one of the 12 participants). All of more than 300 children ages 5-18 will be eligible to check out books from the library.
Please see below regarding a chart of how your donation will help each individual child:
A donation of $1.25 - 1 healthy snack (a juice or water, apple and healthy cereal bar) for a student during a reading session
A donation of $5.00 - 1 book for the library at each individual site (all books purchased will also be used during the reading program)
A donation of $10.00 - Supplies for arts and crafts projects during a reading program session.
A donation of $50 - support for an entire reading program session (books, snacks, supplies) for a day!
