As an emergency physician, I often treat acute exacerbations of chronic diseases, many of which are preventable like obesity and diabetes. As the board chair of HealthStart Foundation, I hope to prevent these illnesses through science-based early childhood education. HealthStart Foundation utilizes a 9-unit curriculum, a school cafeteria program, and a game-app to teach young children the link between the food that they eat and the body parts that they are nourishing. So when 5-year old Karey, grocery shopping with her mother, asks for blueberries because they are good for her heart, I know I’m helping her entire family choose healthier, more sustainable options.
