Healthy Steps Diaper Bank

THE STORY:

Healthy Steps Diaper Bank's mission is to keep children clean, dry, and healthy.

1 out of 3 families struggle to buy diapers. Although Pennsylvania offers programs such as WIC and Food Stamps (SNAP), diapers cannot be obtained through either of these programs. Without a sufficient supply of diapers, parents are forced to keep their babies in diapers longer than is healthy for the child or to even reuse diapers.

Providing diapers to families in need, and teaching  proper diapering techniques, reduces the risk of of diaper rash, staph infections, and urinary tract infections.  The result is a healthier child, fewer doctor and ER visits, and parents that feel confident in providing a basic need for their children.

Many families rely on child care facilities however most child care centers, even free and subsidized facilities, will turn away a child who arrives without a day's supply of disposable diapers.  Many parents cannot go to work or school if they cannot leave their children at a childcare center.  Cloth diapers are not a viable option for most families due to the vast majoirty of child care centers not accepting cloth diapers and laundromats not permitting the washing of cloth diapers at their facilities.

Healthy Steps Diaper Bank, the only diaper bank serving Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry counties, is working to fight diaper need in our community. Currently we are providing over 20,000 diapers per month to families in need. We accomplish this through partnerships with local service agencies. Healthy Steps Diaper Bank collects the diapers and then through these partnerships the diapers are distributed free of charge to families to supplement what they are currently able to purchase. This partnership structure recognizes that individuals and families who need diapers most likely are also in a position to benefit from other social services. Our partners have already qualified people for need and together we are working with them toward “whole” solutions while reducing transportation constraints.

We also offer a free "Healthy Diapering" training to educate mothers and caregivers on the importance of healthy diapering and includes a section on potty training.
