We are passionate about feeding kids right - 50% of children between the ages of 2 - 15 already have fatty streaks in their arteries, literally the early stages of heart disease. Children as young as 8 years old are being prescribed blood pressure and cholesterol lowering drugs.  One-third of all children will get type 2 diabetes if something doesn't change - and for African American and Latino children, that number goes up to 40 - 53%. These problems are virtually 100% reversible with a healthy whole foods plant-based diet .

The Coalition for Healthy School Food works to change the way schools feed kids and creates nutrition education resources and curriculums that we use in the schools and make available to others to use as well. We are a statewide organization but have helped schools all over the country. We work in partnership with the New York City Office of SchoolFood and the Ithaca City School District Child Nutrition Program to introduce healthy, delicious, made from scratch, plant-based entrees into the cafeteria. These recipes have been distributed to over 25,000 schools nationwide including all schools in California.

Our elementary curriculum is called Food UnEarthed: Uncovering the Truth About Food. We teach it in 5 New York City schools reaching over 500 students every week. Our middle school curriculum is a Plant-Based Cooking unit for Family and Consumer Sciences classes - we piloted this with 250 students on Long Island, and it is available on our website for free.

Our signature nutrition education program, Wellness Wakeup Call, is heard by more than 100,000 students every day. It's written by registered dietitians, free for schools in NYS, and available in K-5 and 6-12 versions. Copies go home with elementary students with a healthy recipe on the back to try at home and schools can put either version on their website.

We established the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Snack Program in Ithaca, NY, and ran the program for 2 years. It is now ongoing and run by a local organization. It has changed the culture of the school. You can view a 15 minute video of it on our website.

We hope you'll join in supporting us - to continue developing healthier recipes and nutrition education for schools - we teach plant-based nutrition and the connection between diet and global warming directly to students and make our resources available for others to use so that they can reach many more schools as well.
