BENEFITING: Hearing Health Foundation
ORGANIZER: Hearing Health Foundation
Every year on Marathon Sunday, I stand on 1st avenue cheering on the runners and tell myself that one day I WILL run a marathon and I WILL do it for a charity that I care about.
Well 2013 is the year that I will run the NYC ING Marathon and I will be running for a cure for hearing loss.
When I started working at Hearing Health Foundation in May of 2012, I never knew how much I would learn, and how passionate I would become, about helping people with hearing loss. Having grown up with a grandfather who wore hearing aids for as long as I can remember, there was always constant yelling at the family dinner table to ensure he would hear us. And the fact is - even though he wore hearing aids - he probably couldn't fully hear, or understand, what the rest of us were saying. I have come to learn that while hearing aids do amplify sound, you do not regain your full sense of hearing from them. The only way to fully regain your hearing is by regrowing the hair cells in your ear that, once damaged, lead to hearing loss.
I was drawn to working at HHF as they have been a leader in hearing research for over half a century. Now, HHF has convened a group of scientists from across the world to work together to figure out how to regrow these hair cells in humans and cure hearing loss. In order to keep the research moving forward, HHF needs the funding to be able to sustain these researchers so we can see a cure within the next decade.
I'm sure if my grandfather would have been able to fully regain his hearing and hear his grandchildren's voices - that would have brought a smile to his face. And once we get to a cure, I'm sure it will make the nearly 50 million Americans with hearing loss smile too. As so many of us routinely keep our earbuds cranked up to drown out the everyday noises of city life, I can't help but wonder how many more people a cure will benefit in the years to come.
Please help me meet my goal of raising $3,500 for HHF and fund research that will allow millions to regain one of the most vital of senses.
Thank You in advance for your support! I hope to see you cheering along Team Hearing Health on November 3!
