I'm not much of a runner. So why am I getting ready to run a marathon?
I'm hearing impaired, and have been most of my life. It's gotten progressively worse, so much so that even with hearing aids it's almost impossible to understand the TV, radio or use the phone. Being able to hear other people has also become more difficult.
About a year ago I was looking into research being done on hearing loss when I came across Hearing Health Foundation's webpage. What interested me the most was that they are working on finding a cure for hearing loss. Something else interested me, though: several of their members were running in the New York City Marathon to help raise money for this research. I wondered if I, too, could run in support of cure for hearing loss and was happy when they gave me the opportunity to be on their team this year!
But me, a marathon runner? At first it seemed a bit of a stretch. Slowly, though, I've been getting there. I ran my first 10K recently. I've been getting out before 6am several times a week to run 4-6 miles. Of course there are days when I feel too tired or sore to run, or my iPod nano says I've only run 0.5 miles when it really seems more like five. And then I think about the day when I - and so many others like me - read on the front page of the newspaper that a cure for hearing loss has finally be found.
I'm excited to be running in the New York City Marathon as part of Team Hearing Health Foundation this November. I hope you'll support me with a donation. Thank you!
