BENEFITING: Hearing Health Foundation
ORGANIZER: Hearing Health Foundation
EVENT DATE: Nov 02, 2014
Last year, I watched with a bursting heart and misty eyes, as my best friend Veronica — who previously did. Not. Run — ran her heart out, and finished her first marathon, on behalf of finding a cure for hearing loss and tinnitus; a cause deeply felt and close to home.
Veronica's beautiful daughter — my Goddaughter, Marlowe — was born with profound hearing loss. Marlowe is bright and funny and doing her thing in the cutest of all possible ways, at all possible times. One of my greatest hopes for her is that she will one day have the opportunity to hear music, and voices, and all of the wonderful sounds in our world that we take for granted every day. I think it can be done.
I did something... unexpected... a few nights ago. In the midst of a tough work week, at the annual benefit for Hearing Health Foundation — hanging out with Veronica, drinking, perhaps, a bit too much red wine — I committed to running the 2014 NYC marathon [*Smack, thud*].
Veronica's text message to me, first thing the following morning: "First clue you drank more than you thought: headache. Second clue: you committed to a marathon."
While I have absolutely no idea how the hell I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it — with gusto. I'm doing it for my wonderful little imp of a Goddaughter, Marlowe, so she can fully hear us cheering for her one day.
