For 12 years, Lenny has been living with an an inguinal hernia about the size and weight of a watermelon. This hernia has caused his organs to shift - his small intestine and half his bladder is located in his scrotum. At the age of 67, Lenny has no insurance, no Medicaid, no Medicare, and no relatives who can help him. Hospitals have denied him assistance due to the high risk of respiratory failure. This risky procedure requires a specialist - and after 2 years Lenny has finally found a surgeon and hospital willing to take on this challenging task - but at a price.
The surgeon, who specializes in hernias, works out of Beth Israel Medial center and has agreed to operate on Lenny for just the cost of operation - $5,500. With the help of some friends, we were able to raise enough money for the operation. But he still needs our help.
An additional $15,000/day will need to go to Beth Israel for the hospital fee (this is with a 50% discounted from the original cost). We are trying to raise $40,000 so Lenny can stay and recover at the hospital after his surgery.
Lenny will be having surgery at Beth Israel Medical Center on Tuesday, August 26th, 2014.
How we met Lenny:
Lenny is the most famous guy in the Diamond District. A former Wall-Street hotshot who can now be seen begging for money to provide for two family members - one is blind & the other is disabled. Life circumstances have led him to the streets, but Lenny is now fighting for his life.
When we visited Lenny on Wednesday, August 20th, we were blown away by how many people walked by and shouted “Hey Lenny!” and passed him their change. Our good friend Oscar was there and he told us a story that explained why Lenny had so many friends.
A few years ago, Oscar received news that he was being released. As he was leaving his office, Lenny asked how he was doing. Oscar explained that he no longer had a job. Lenny reached into his pocket, pulled out all the money he had collected and tried to give it to Oscar without hesitation.
When our friend Meir met him, Lenny said “no one cares enough to help me.” For Meir, this was a call to action. By making up flyers and connecting with a nonprofit Yad Laniyim (hands for the poor), he singlehandedly raised $12,000. Most of the support has come from Lenny’s friends who work in the area.
