THE STORY:

UPLIFTING PEOPLE IN NEED

Our group began from a simple act of kindness from our founder, Larry Oleinick. Almost two years ago, Larry went down to Hart Plaza one day and simply passed out some meals to a small group of homeless people. The people were grateful, but suspicious of this lone-do-gooder. Larry's heart was touched, and he dedicated himself to developing this deed into something bigger. From there, this small start-up quickly grew. In just a matter of weeks volunteers flocked to the cause, joining Larry by shopping and distributing food, raising money, awareness, picking up in-kind donations and forming partnerships and donating professional services. We then applied for 501(c)(3) status, which was received in a relatively short time.

Our team literally goes into the streets of Detroit, starting with Hart Plaza, EVERY SINGLE MONDAY, WEDNESDAY AND FRIDAY at noon, rain or shine, whether it's zero degrees or 100 and distribute lunches, clothing, toiletries, helpful information and hugs - we're building relationships". And then, in collaboration with Southwest Solutions, whom we meet on the street  every other Monday, we assist people in getting proper identification and finding temporary housing. We don't sit in an office and hope some homeless or needy person will walk in and ask for help. We go right into the streets of our beloved city, right up to people in need and provide them with something that will give them both nourshment and hope. We know their names, and their story. They know that we can be counted on to give them something they need to survive, be it a meal, water, a coat, gloves, shoes, underwear and hope. we liken ourselves to a modern urban cavalry that canvasses the streets and engages with people that others ignore.

We don't skip days, in fact we haven't missed a single day in almost two years. We keep our word, like clockwork. Our people rely on us, and we've never let them down. We have now served over 10,000 lunches in the past 22 months along with handing out 1,000's of hygiene kit, new socks, new underwear and new t-shirts.
